As a Crossfitter we do a lot of Hero WODs, but this one hits close to home. I have a husband in the military, I have a sister who battles with mental health and has attempted suicide, and we also had a close family friend who died after coming home from war. Sadly, I think we all know someone that has passed due to suicide.

Now Dave Castro said he didn’t create this WOD to raise awareness for suicide, but I do think it’s important to talk about it.

I already wrote a blog about Mental Health, but let’s talk specifically about our Veterans.

There were more than 6,000 Veteran suicides each year from 2008 to 2016.

The VA has taken new measures to help:

  • Expanding the Veterans Crisis Line to three call centers and more than 700 employees, increasing our ability to provide 24/7 support.
  • Hiring a Suicide Prevention Coordinator at every VA facility to deliver targeted care to at-risk patients
  • Adding “high-risk” flagging to Veterans Health Administration patient charts to integrate suicide prevention with clinical care and provide enhanced care to patients flagged as “high risk.”
  • Expanding access to mental health care to ensure that all Veterans can get the care they need.

But just like non-Veteran suicide, there is still a stigma to Mental Health. There is a stigma to asking for help, specially among men. We need to break that down. We need to talk about it. We need our service members (and everyone really) to know it’s okay that they are having a hard time, it’s okay to ask for help, and they aren’t alone.

Now I can’t imagine what it feels like to battle not wanting to live every day. So, when I did this WOD I thought about that. I thought about Chad, who I didn’t know. I thought about the soldiers, that I do know. I thought about every story I’ve heard where someone decided to take their own life. When I wanted to stop, I thought about their struggle, which I know is a daily one, and that kept me going. I thought about writing this, to create awareness. I thought about what I can do to help.

I ask that as you do this work out, think about those we’ve lost. Think about those that are suffering alone. Think about this not as just another WOD, because it’s not.

I finished this WOD in 1:49:32. I used a 20-inch box and I started with a weighted backpack, but I had to take it off, because I couldn’t breathe anymore. I wanted to stop if I’m being honest, but I slowly chugged along remembering why we are doing this.
